Behind the bounty
Nobody ever captured Gol D. Roger. Monkey D. Garp came closest, cornering him more than once and never once bringing him in, and it was not a bounty hunter who eventually brought him down: it was an incurable disease. Roger learned of it before his final voyage, took his crew all the way to Laugh Tale, disbanded it, and then walked into Marine custody himself.
What came next was no longer his to arrange. The Marines took him back to Loguetown, the town he was born in, and staged the execution as a public spectacle meant to frighten the world off piracy. It was held in a downpour, in front of a crowd that held a teenaged Shanks and Buggy in tears and a boy named Smoker, whose lasting memory is that the man was grinning.
His last words turned the ceremony inside out. The treasure was real, it belonged to whoever could find it, and he never said where it was. An execution meant to end piracy opened the Great Age of Piracy instead, and the seas filled with crews sailing after the One Piece.
5,564,800,000 berries is the highest figure ever recorded, unmatched by any pirate since: the largest bounty still active, Kaido's, sits close to a billion below it. The number worked while he lived — Marines and rival pirates hunted his crew to get at him — and it paid out to nobody. The only thing Roger negotiated before dying was that Garp would watch over the child he was leaving behind.
