CONFIDENTIAL

Zero does not mean unknown. When Bartholomew Kuma reads out what Teach's head is worth at Banaro, the figure really is nothing, and the Vivre Card databook later spelled out what that covers: the World Government did want him, it had simply never promised a single berry to anyone who brought him in. It remains the lowest amount in the series, and it is his alone.

Getting there took more than twenty years. Teach came aboard the Moby Dick at twelve as an apprentice and later served in the second division. When the commander's seat fell vacant he turned it down, saying he had no such ambition, and pushed Ace to take it instead. Around fifteen years ago he was the one who left the three scars over Shanks' left eye, and Shanks warned Whitebeard that it had not been carelessness. Even that put no price on him.

Then Thatch, commander of the fourth division, found the Yami Yami no Mi, the very fruit Teach had joined the crew as a child to wait for. He killed him that night and deserted. The matter stayed among pirates: Ace went after him personally, against the wishes of Whitebeard, who did not want to send a commander to his death.

At Banaro he beat Ace, handed him to the Marines, and was given a Warlord seat although he had neither a bounty nor a reputation to trade on. The title served exactly one purpose. It opened Impel Down and let him walk down to Level 6 and recruit. He gave it up publicly, in the middle of the war, the moment it stopped being useful.
