Squard’s Bounty at 210,000,000 Berries

The wound that should have killed Whitebeard came from one of his own men's hands. At Marineford, in the chapter titled “One Heart, One Man,” Sakazuki convinces Squard that the Emperor secretly sacrificed his subordinate crews to spare Ace — and Squard, captain of the Maelstrom Spider Pirates, taken in by Whitebeard as a son after his own crew was wiped out, drives his sword into the back of the one man who'd adopted him.

That massacre dated back more than twenty years: it was Gol D. Roger himself who destroyed Squard's original crew, leaving only him alive — a hatred he'd carried against Roger's name ever since, until an admiral's manipulation redirected it, for one sword-stroke, against his own protector instead. Whitebeard takes the blow without retaliating, and tells him, in substance, that a son shouldn't pay for his father's crimes — a line aimed as much at Squard as at Roger's own son, standing in that same battle, within earshot.

His bounty, 210 million berries, never separates that moment from the rest of his career as a subordinate captain: the register prices the man, not the instant he nearly became his protector's killer without meaning to. Squard survives the war with no wound the story bothers to record, attends both Whitebeard's and Ace's funerals soon after, and then leaves the narrative entirely — a pardon granted on the open battlefield, never revisited or contradicted since.
