CONFIDENTIAL

This number is older than Thriller Bark. Gecko Moria was already carrying it twenty-three years before Sabaody, when he commanded the Gecko Pirates and took that crew back to Wano to attack Kaidou and the Beasts Pirates. He walked away alone. Frozen by his entry into the Seven Warlords, the figure has never been revised since: it prices a captain who charged an Emperor head-on, not the shadow thief he became later.

Wano was partly his. He had washed ashore there from the West Blue as a child, and the people of Ringo took him in and named him Kouzuki for the strength he showed. He left again ashamed and unnoticed, but not before opening Shimotsuki Ryuma's grave to carry off the samurai's corpse and his sword, Shusui.

What he built next was not a crew of corpses. Thriller Bark ran on living people: Absalom, the doctor Hogback bought with the resurrection of the woman he had loved, and Perona, taken in as a child and raised as his own daughter. The zombies were the army, not the household, and Luffy took that army from him in one fight by freeing the thousand stolen shadows; his own shadow, Doppelman, cannot be destroyed and simply reformed.

The title did not protect him from his own side. Coming out of Marineford, in the back streets of headquarters, Doflamingo and a squad of Pacifista fell on him: too weak to keep a Warlord's seat, the war making a convenient explanation for his disappearance. Moria asked whether the order came from Sengoku, and Doflamingo grinned and said it came from higher up. Absalom and Hogback pulled him out, and it was Absalom who drew him back into the open years later. At Hachinosu, demanding his man from Blackbeard, Moria was struck from behind by a Shiryu made invisible by Absalom's stolen fruit, and Catarina Devon told him she had killed him.
