The figure was raised during the two-year gap, and the story never says whether that happened before or after he joined her crew. When he turns up again at Zou he is carrying three hundred million and the rank of Rook among the Big Mom Pirates. Sailing under an Emperor's flag is worth a raise; it does not cancel what came before it, and he handed nothing over to anybody. His men, his guns and his ship stayed his throughout.

There is an irony in his choice of wife, and it is not the obvious one. Chiffon is the twin sister of Lola, the daughter who ran from the arranged marriage their mother had lined up for her. Unable to reach the runaway, Big Mom took it out on the sister who looked like her. The result: the daughter who did marry cut ties with her own blood and backed her husband's plan to kill her mother, while the vivre card the runaway had handed Nami years earlier became the Straw Hats' safe conduct inside Totto Land. One daughter accepted a marriage, one escaped one, and Big Mom's house ended up with two holes in it.

The best part is what the rank got him. As a trusted officer, Bege was put in charge of security for the Tea Party. His crew checked the guests in at the door of the Whole Cake Chateau, and one man who tried to walk through without a body search was shot on the spot by Charlotte Katakuri. A pirate whose body contains an army was holding the entrance, and he had already decided what he was going to walk in through it.
