CONFIDENTIAL

This bounty is the record of a refusal. It exists in this form only because Jinbe surrendered his title rather than follow an order.

The World Government had summoned its Warlords for the war against Whitebeard. Jinbe declined, and did not bother dressing up the reason: Edward Newgate had been protecting Fish-Man Island for years, free of charge, asking nothing, where the World Government had demanded a Warlord's seat and a man to fill it. You do not open fire on the only disinterested protector your people have ever had.

The refusal cost exactly what it was always going to. Jinbe was thrown into Impel Down's Level Six — the floor whose existence appears on no official document — into Ace's own cell, a man he had been friends with for years. He got out because a teenager blew the doors off in passing, and it was on the Marineford battlefield that he handed his resignation to Sengoku in person. The bounty was reactivated at 438 million.

The rest belongs to Marineford. Jinbe fought on Whitebeard's side, carried Luffy off the plaza when he collapsed, and took a magma fist through the chest on his behalf. He kept the scar.

There is a sequel this figure does not record. Luffy had bled out after the battle and needed type F. Jinbe volunteered; someone pointed out the old law forbidding transfusions between species; he answered that he was a pirate. The man whose mentor had refused a human's blood rather than survive on it gave his own to a human so that he would live.

He left that war with no title, no island under official protection, and the one status he had not held in eleven years: ordinary pirate.
