Jinbe’s Bounty at 250,000,000 Berries

There is a chain of causation running out of this frozen 250 million that ends in an East Blue village, with a ten-year-old girl.

By accepting the Warlord title, Jinbe secured what he had come for: official protection for Fish-Man Island and an end to the raids on his people. The World Government set its conditions, one of which was amnesty for several imprisoned fish-men. Arlong was among them.

Jinbe signed. Arlong walked out of Impel Down, announced that he was taking his captaincy back and that only killing him would stop it; Jinbe beat him to the ground, and Arlong left anyway. Course set for East Blue, a village levelled, Cocoyasi held to ransom for eight years. A girl named Nami spent her childhood stealing to buy her people's freedom back. None of it appears anywhere in Jinbe's file, and Jinbe knows it — he would apologise to Nami years later without reaching for a single mitigating circumstance.

The figure itself stayed frozen throughout his tenure. That is how the status works: while a Warlord holds his seat, his bounty exists without being collectable, suspended somewhere between criminal and civil servant.

Two hundred and fifty million is therefore the price of a bargain. Jinbe traded his own freedom of movement for his island's security, and discovered that the World Government never sells anything without arranging for somebody else to pay.

The arithmetic deserves its due and no more. Jinbe never dressed it up as a sacrifice, and the island was indeed left alone — but it was covered twice over. Whitebeard's flag reached Fish-Man Island across the same years, and it was the Emperor's death rather than the end of Jinbe's tenure that reopened the question: Big Mom claimed the island soon afterwards, against ten tons of sweets a month. That territory's safety never rested on one signature.
