Bounty of Penguin – credible but non-canon

Penguin nearly lost an arm trying to save Shachi. The story comes from the spin-off novel One Piece novel Law, which is not canon: in a forest on Swallow Island, a boar has just run his friend through, Penguin tries to hurl a stolen bomb at it, the bomb goes off before he can let go, and the boar tears his right arm away. Law, barely thirteen, spends hours reattaching it on the farm of the inventor Wolf, then collapses. When Penguin wakes, the arm works again.

The same novel makes him the one sent to alert Wolf when a pirate crew starts terrorizing Pleasure Town, the affair that convinces Law to put to sea, and its epilogue shows a North Blue newspaper already reporting the Heart Pirates' exploits. The manga takes over at Sabaody, where the crew arrives after a long crossing of the Grand Line along one of the Log Pose routes.

After Marineford, Penguin is the one who voices concern about the chaos Blackbeard and his crew are stirring up, while Law would rather keep his distance. A little over two years later it is the Blackbeard Pirates who sink the Polar Tang near Winner Island, and only Law and Bepo get away; the story has not said what became of Penguin.

His face did end up on a wanted poster, just not a Marine one. In Wano, Orochi's men put up posters for the Straw Hats and the Heart Pirates, and his spells his name with an archaic Japanese word for penguin that reads literally as human-bird. A World Government bounty is another matter and remains open: in a crew of this caliber subordinates can be priced too, Bepo was, and nothing excludes Penguin. Not as far as the public knows, anyway.
