Lacuba’s Bounty at 17,000,000 Berries

Lacuba didn't die in battle. A pirate captain known for cunning tactics, he's captured and reduced to slavery before the reader even learns the details of his fall, then put up for sale at the Human Auctioning House on the Sabaody Archipelago — a fate he shares, at that exact moment, with dozens of other nameless captives lined up on the same stage. Sanji is scouting the place ahead of time, before the auction of the mermaid Keimi that will set off the rest of the arc even begins; what he stumbles onto first has nothing to do with Keimi or the Straw Hats.

Before a single bid can be called on his own lot, Lacuba suddenly collapses, mouth full of blood. Sanji understands in one glance what nobody else in the room saw coming: the man has bitten off and torn out his own tongue rather than let his body be sold like merchandise. Suicide, here, isn't an accepted defeat — it's the last act still available to a captain who's already been stripped of everything except that one choice.

The Marine file has no interest in any of that: the 17 million bounty rewards Lacuba's tactical reputation before Sabaody, not his end. It remains, in fact, the only document that still speaks of him as a free man, since the enslavement that followed never generated a single administrative line — a captain priced by a government that never knew, or never cared to find out, how his career actually ended.
