Roshio’s Bounty at 42,000,000 Berries

Executioner Roshio built his reputation on one habit: killing on the spot anyone who beat him at cards. That exact reputation is what kills him. Mock Town, on Jaya, isn't an ordinary stopover: it's the last known crossing point before Skypiea, the one place where the Knock Up Stream's rising current lets a ship leave the Grand Line for the sky — every crew chasing altitude eventually passes through it. It's there, at the Wild Cherry bar, that the captain of the Roshio Pirates wins a poker hand against an unremarkable young stranger still far from his later legend — Bellamy the Hyena, just another pirate passing through.

Bellamy accuses him of cheating. The reply isn't up for debate: a knife driven through Roshio's hand, a bullet in his leg, before Bellamy chases him through the streets of Mock Town to finish him off with Spring Hopper, a spring-loaded leap that leaves no room to run. The man who used to execute opponents over card games dies over a card game himself, at the hands of a pirate nobody in that bar yet connected to the name he'd later carry.

The 42 million berries obviously predate that fatal afternoon — they sanction Roshio's earlier career, a captain feared enough to justify the figure well before Jaya became the backdrop of his own end. The Marine file simply stops at Mock Town: no follow-up, no capture, only the account drawn from witnesses that the most feared man in that particular bar ended up executed by the very method he practiced himself.
