CONFIDENTIAL

Fifty-two years ago, Captain Yorki, known as Calico, sailed his crew across the West Blue to Reverse Mountain, left a young whale named Laboon in the care of the old doctor Crocus, and pushed on into the Grand Line without looking back. The promise made to that whale — to circle the world and come home for her — was never kept, and it wasn't Yorki who chose to break it.

What little survives of his image comes down to two tattoos, one under his right eye and one under his lower lip, and a song. Yorki loved Binks' Sake enough to have the youngest member of his crew, a still-living skeleton named Brook, play it on request, before an illness forced him to part from a crew he plainly loved more than his own pirate career. No arrest, no lost battle — just a body that gave out before anyone could keep the promise to Laboon in his place. The whale kept waiting at the same spot for fifty years regardless.

No figure was ever shown to the reader for the man who made that promise. There is a quiet fairness in that gap: a captain taken by illness rather than caught by the law never gave the Government a file to close. Laboon and Brook closed it instead, each in their own way — one by waiting, one by remembering.
