CONFIDENTIAL

Eighty-five days adrift with a starving teenager left Zeff with exactly one certainty: better to lose a leg than lose the kid who'd stowed away on his ship by accident. A former captain of the Cook Pirates, he shares his last rations with young Sanji until there's nothing left to share, then keeps feeding him anyway by eating his own leg, without ever telling him until much later, letting him believe for years that he'd simply lost it at sea.

That sacrifice ends his pirating career more decisively than any lost battle at sea could have: he trades his ship and his leg for a floating restaurant, the Baratie, where he trains Sanji as a cook instead of a buccaneer, and later lets him leave to join Luffy without ever trying to hold him back. The goal he'd been chasing before the wreck, the All Blue, the legendary sea where all four oceans supposedly meet, becomes a dream he hands down rather than one he ever reaches himself.

The number on his bounty has never been shown to readers: Oda simply never revealed it, which sets Zeff apart from most pirates of his generation, whose figures eventually surfaced somewhere else in the story. What's on record instead is a wooden leg, a recipe passed down, and an adopted son who, much later, carries the title of best cook aboard a crew that set out chasing the very sea Zeff himself never got to see again.
