CONFIDENTIAL

Oden spent five years at sea in total, and this bounty fits entirely inside them. He had tried to leave Wano thirty-eight times before he turned eighteen; when the Whitebeard Pirates tried to sail off without him, he hung on to a chain fixed to the Moby Dick and held on for nearly three days, the trial Whitebeard had set him. He let go with ten minutes left, to help a woman he heard in trouble. That was Toki. Whitebeard took him on for it.

He married at sea and both his children were born there: Momonosuke in their second year aboard, Hiyori two years after that, by which point the crew had been split into five divisions and Oden had been given the second. It is in this stretch that he became a wanted criminal. No figure has ever reached the reader — Oda has not shown one — but it existed before Roger had heard of him.

Roger asked Whitebeard for him because a Kozuki can read poneglyphs. Whitebeard refused to hand over family and gave way only because Oden wanted to go. He deciphered the Road Poneglyphs that led to Laugh Tale, cut Roger's message into the Golden Belfry Bell of Shandora in the ancient script, and kept his log page by page — the log Yamato would find after the execution and treat as scripture.

Home in Wano, he found Toki wounded and his son attacked, and marched on the Flower Capital to kill Orochi himself. Orochi showed him a room full of hostages instead. Five years of dancing naked against their lives, explained to nobody. Then an hour in boiling oil holding all nine of his retainers above it, knowing Kaido would break his word. Twenty years later they came back and won, all but Kanjuro, the Kurozumi spy.
