Retirement was his own idea, floated in front of a serving admiral. On Sabaody, Rayleigh joked to Kizaru that if the Marines would just tear up his wanted poster, he could see out his days in peace. The admiral answered that a pirate's crimes never go away, least of all a Roger Pirate's, and that the Marines would need special preparations to take him in on the spot. It is the closest look the series has given this amount, and Oda has never put the figure on the page.

What sits behind it is not thin. Rayleigh was first mate of the Oro Jackson, the man at Gol D. Roger's right hand when the crew reached Laugh Tale. Roger turned himself in; Rayleigh did not. He simply stopped sailing. He could not bring himself to watch his captain die and raised a glass from a distance instead, laughing and weeping at once.

He coats ships at Sabaody, hiding from nobody, married to Shakuyaku, once the Kuja Pirates' first mate. It has not settled him. At the Human Auctioning House he pulled Camie off the block, freed the captives in front of witnesses and dropped the whole room with Conqueror's Haki, then held Kizaru in place long enough for the Straw Hats to be scattered. Not long after the war he stole a Marine ship with Jinbe to get Luffy inside Marineford; two years later, on Sabaody, he proudly told the Marines the boy was his student.

Past seventy, he walked ashore on Amazon Lily, called Blackbeard Whitebeard's cabin boy and talked an Emperor into leaving, while privately allowing that a straight fight would go the other way. With no figure of his own, the neighbours are the only guide: Marco, Whitebeard's first mate, is posted at 1,374,000,000.
