CONFIDENTIAL

Only three pirate ships out of ten make it through the first half of the Grand Line to Fish-Man Island; Gyro's crossed intact. The captain of the Gyro Pirates carries the proof on his own body: a missing left arm, replaced by a spiked metal crab claw that earned him the nickname Crab-Hand. The 73 million berries reward no specific feat — they mark the plain fact of having brought a crew there alive, across the most hostile half of ocean in the known world.

What happens next does nothing to improve his file, and explains the figure even less. No sooner ashore than Gyro is spotted by Hammond, a lieutenant of the New Fish-Man Pirates, who orders him to join Hody Jones's crew on pain of death — recruitment dressed up as consent, coercion underneath. Gyro complies, folded into the ranks of a captain whose sole agenda, revenge against humans on behalf of the Fish-Men, was never his to begin with.

Hody still doesn't treat him as an ally. He tears off the crab-claw with a single bite and beats Gyro alone, unaided, in front of Gyro's own assembled crew, for the lesson of it. Then he spares him — not out of mercy, but because a humiliated captain sent back to the surface alive spreads the New Fish-Man Pirates' terror further than one more body at the bottom of the undersea island. Gyro surfaces to tell the tale, an unwilling mouthpiece for a crew that was never his. His bounty, though, never moved after any of it: the whole of it sits in the crossing that came before.
