Kaidou did not recruit King so much as pull him out of a laboratory. Over thirty-four years ago a Lunarian boy named Arber was held in the World Government's Third Research Institute on Punk Hazard, where his endurance was tested by burning him alive again and again, and where his Lineage Factor was drawn out of him. Kaidou, a test subject there himself, broke out, found the boy on his way, asked his name and told him he would be called King from then on, and would be his right hand.

That is what the figure buys. The government was not pricing an unknown in a mask: it was pricing Kaidou's first recruit and right-hand man, the one who runs the entire crew whenever the governor-general is busy elsewhere, and in all likelihood it knew what that body was, having had it on a table. Decades later Vegapunk used the same Lunarian blood to build the Seraphim.

The full leather mask leaves only his eyes visible, and not one man in the crew had ever seen what was under it. When Zoro finally tore it open and subordinates standing nearby recognized the Lunarian features, King burned them where they stood.

His fire was never the weak spot. The flames rising off his back are what make him nearly untouchable; when they go out he gains speed and loses his defense, and that trade is what Zoro worked out before cutting him down. A week after Onigashima fell, he was being held at Udon's old Prisoner Mine when Admiral Ryokugyu impaled him near the heart and called for a warship. Weeks later, still bandaged, he sat listening to Vegapunk tell the world how it treats the rare races it finds.
