CONFIDENTIAL

The figure is absurd and entirely deliberate: 1,111,000,000. Four ones in a row, for a man who fights with three swords and exactly one idea. The World Government did not do this on purpose. Readers noticed within seconds.

What sits behind it is less decorative. On Onigashima, Zoro fought King, Kaido's right hand, posted at 1,390,000,000 — a Lunarian, a species presumed extinct, able to generate his own flame and refuse damage entirely for as long as it burns. Zoro cut him out of the air after working out how to put the mechanism out, using Enma, the sword Kozuki Oden carried, which spends every fight demanding more Haki than its bearer intends to give it. It's also the fight in which his Conqueror's Haki manifested for the first time beyond argument.

None of the division of labour is new, though. The rule has held since Alabasta: the captain takes the boss, the first mate takes the right hand. Crocodile and Daz Bonez. Lucci and Kaku. Kaido and King. What changed on Onigashima was not the job description, it was the order of magnitude — the same arrangement, invoiced in billions.

The register also reversed, without noticing, an order it had held from the very start. At each of the three previous revisions Sanji came out ahead of Zoro, by ten million as recently as Totto Land. Wano flips the ranking for the first time, by seventy-nine million. What that proves is of interest to exactly two people.
