Usopp’s Bounty at 500,000,000 Berries

Five hundred million. The figure invites one specific comparison: it is exactly what Luffy was carrying when he left Dressrosa. At Wano, the crew's sniper caught up with the number his captain had been posted at two arcs earlier.

Usopp's record rests on a sequence of thoroughly documented misunderstandings. A fictional identity at Enies Lobby; at Dressrosa, a title of godhood awarded by the gladiators he had freed, and reprinted verbatim on the official notice. At no point has the World Government priced what Usopp actually does, which is shoot — from very far away, very precisely, at targets nobody else has seen.

There is a coherence to this that Usopp is probably alone in missing. A man whose primary weapon is presentation ends up assessed by an administration that can only judge appearances. He and the administration speak the same language.

Then the strangest detail in this entry, and it is an editorial one. Yasopp, sniper of the Red Hair Pirates and Usopp's father, is a wanted man whose figure Oda has never shown: the poster exists inside the story, the number has never been put in front of the reader. The son is priced at five hundred million; for the father there is nothing to compare.

Usopp left Syrup Village to become a brave warrior of the sea, like the man who had left him behind. As far as the World Government's paperwork is concerned, he has already won.

A soberer reading of the amount: five hundred million places him sixth in his crew, ahead of Franky, Brook and Nami. By misjudging him consistently in the same direction, the Government eventually filed him roughly where his crewmates would have.
