A vice admiral stabbing his own hand with a tanto to stay conscious: that is the best-documented scene of Momonga's career, and it happens before Marineford even starts. Sent to Amazon Lily to deliver Boa Hancock the execution order targeting Portgas D. Ace, he watches his men turn to stone under the Mero Mero no Mi. Rather than share their fate, he inflicts enough pain on himself to block the effect — and holds that pain until the Empress agrees to answer the Warlords' summons.

Commander of base G-1, Momonga carries no Devil Fruit: a sword, Rokushiki footwork (Soru, Geppo), and Observation and Armament Haki carry his reputation instead. At Enies Lobby, he is one of five vice admirals summoned by mistake — Doberman and Yamakaji among them — after Spandam activates, without authorization, the golden Buster Call snail an admiral had entrusted to him. At Marineford, he cuts down cannon fire launched by the Whitebeard Pirates and stands ready to take part in Luffy's execution himself, until Shanks forces a ceasefire on the entire battlefield.
