    CONFIDENTIAL

Nekomamushi is sitting on a secret the World Government would pay a fortune for, if it even knew it existed: the Whale Forest on the island of Zou hides a Road Poneglyph, one of the rare clues pointing toward Laugh Tale. As head of the Guardians and keeper of that forest, he has spent decades protecting information that even the Emperors search for in vain.

Co-ruler of the Mokomo Dukedom alongside Inuarashi, he governs its nights, from six in the evening to six in the morning, under the title of Night Lord — a twenty-year rivalry with his co-ruler settled not by one beating the other but by splitting the clock between them, as if neither had ever truly backed down.

At Onigashima, he is the one who takes on Jack, the Drought, one of Kaido's three all-star generals — fighting in Sulong form alongside Inuarashi against the man who once laid siege to their own island.

He is also the one who, welcoming the Straw Hats stranded on Zou after the Sabaody archipelago scattered them, chooses to tell them about Kaido and the history of Wano — the very first time Luffy hears of the Emperor he will face three years later. The keeper of the best-hidden secret in the New World is also the one who decided, that day, to give up a different one.

Zou itself appears on no World Government map at all: a mobile island riding the back of a giant elephant, structurally impossible to register. Nekomamushi never had a bounty, then, not out of mercy, but because the place he lives in never existed for the administration that would have had to issue one.
