A little girl asked which of the two fish was bigger. That is the exact and complete cause of everything that followed: two captains of the Giant Warrior Pirates decided the question warranted a duel, selected Little Garden as the ground, and fought there every single day for a hundred years.

This amount predates all of it. It was issued when the Giant Warrior Pirates were among the most feared crews at sea, in a period when the largest figures in the world ran to tens of millions, which placed its holder at the very top of the known hierarchy. That is the frame required to understand what these two names once meant. Not prehistoric curiosities on an island of dinosaurs, but a naval force the governments of the day took entirely seriously.

There is an irony particular to Elbaf running through this. Among giants, dying in battle is an honourable end and a warrior's reputation is inherited. A bounty there is not a threat. It is an acknowledgement of receipt.

Dorry never gave any sign of fearing it, and there is no reason he should have. The document states that a man is dangerous. Its subject read it as outside confirmation that somebody had been paying attention to his work. The crew, meanwhile, never stopped existing. It stayed on Elbaf while its two captains settled a question about fish at the other end of the world, and it was still waiting for them a hundred years later.
