Kinoko told Luffy to stop hoping. History proved him wrong within a few chapters.

A former Level 5 inmate at Impel Down — the level for ordinary criminals, not monsters — he is swept up with Buggy's group during the mass breakout Luffy sets off. Heavyset, sporting the mushroom-shaped hair that gives him his name, he does not believe Ace can be saved and tells the young captain to accept his brother's death rather than exhaust himself for nothing — a defeated man's advice, coming from someone who never tried anything himself to change his own fate before running into Buggy, and who has no fight of his own on record either before or after that scene.

He follows him to Marineford anyway, and finds himself, a few hours later, an eyewitness to something no cautious counsel could have predicted: Whitebeard, moments from death, offers an alliance to Buggy himself, his makeshift breakout companion turned improbable survivor of a war between legends. Kinoko later joins the Buggy Pirates' postwar expansion alongside the other Level 5 escapees who followed the same captain out of the same prison, with no other individual fact ever recorded under his own name since.

Over 100,000,000 berries for a man who never won a single named duel and never once tried to escape on his own initiative — the figure here prices being in the right place at the exact moment history disproved everything he had just said.
